Watford FC has achieved an impressive ranking as the third most sustainable team in the Sky Bet Championship, and fourth in the broader EFL category, according to the inaugural EFL Sustainability Table developed by Sport Positive, an initiative with United Nations support.
Sport Positive undertakes a comprehensive collection of vital environmental and sustainability data from all 92 football clubs across England’s top four divisions.
This process is aimed at gauging the sustainability efforts of each individual club.
The evaluation covers 11 pivotal areas, including:
- policy commitment
- utilisation of clean energy
- energy efficiency practices
- sustainable transportation solutions
- reduction or elimination of single-use plastics
- waste management strategies
- water efficiency measures
- adoption of plant-based/low carbon food options
- biodiversity initiatives
- educational endeavours
- communication and engagement strategies
These findings are then used to establish an overall ranking for each club, with this year marking the inclusion of the EFL in the assessment.
Sport Positive has been producing the Premier League Sustainability Table since 2019.
On the achievement, Head of Sustainability and Procurement at Watford FC, Tarang Panchal, said: “I am delighted to see our positioning in Sport Positive’s Sustainability Table.
“On this journey so far we have done a lot behind the scenes, but we still have lots to do. This includes further reducing our consumption, becoming a Net Zero football club and really engaging and inspiring our fans and followers to get involved and make changes in their own lives to reduce their carbon footprint.
“Our ranking reflects a commitment by the club to deliver on multiple sustainability projects, initiatives and policies that will increasingly change the way the club grows in the future.
“There has been a big push over the last 12 months, fully supported by the board and our hard-working staff at the club, to have a good standing among our peers on this ever-increasingly important subject of sustainability.
“We have a long and proud reputation as the Original Family Club, so to push ourselves to be a greener club for future generations is a natural path for us.”
